~ Food Renegade
I read about this same issue on A World Of Wisdom's blog several months ago & have been doing some more looking into it since. It's so very disappointing to me the amount of "foods" that we think are natural, good for us, & A-OK. Until we find out the truth - that the food industry has NOT been telling US the truth. (What else is new, right?)
Instead of "freshly squeezed" & "natural", it's aseptic storage and deaeration. After pasteurization & before packaging, the juice is transferred to a holding tank, & oxygen is removed. The juice becomes TASTELESS & stays "good" for up to a YEAR. In order taste to orange juice, flavor packets are added back in. These flavor packs are made from oranges, and they are not required to be listed on the packaging, DESPITE the fact that they are chemically altered:
"When the juice is stripped of oxygen it is also stripped of flavor providing chemicals. Juice companies therefore hire flavor and fragrance companies, the same ones that formulate perfumes for Dior and Calvin Klein, to engineer flavor packs to add back to the juice to make it taste fresh. Flavor packs aren’t listed as an ingredient on the label because technically they are derived from orange essence and oil. Yet those in the industry will tell you that the flavor packs, whether made for reconstituted or pasteurized orange juice, resemble nothing found in nature. The packs added to juice earmarked for the North American market tend to contain high amounts of ethyl butyrate, a chemical in the fragrance of fresh squeezed orange juice that, juice companies have discovered, Americans favor. Mexicans and Brazilians have a different palate. Flavor packs fabricated for juice geared to these markets therefore highlight different chemicals, the decanals say, or terpene compounds such as valencine."
So far, the only commercial brand I know of that does not contain these chemically altered non food flavor packets is the "Naked" brand. When Amy of LDS Holistic Living inquired about their juice, she received a reply from them stating the following:
"We're always glad to answer questions about our totally unfooled around with juices and smoothies.
Naked Juice OJ does not contain any flavor packets. Our all natural juices and smoothies are made from the best bare-naked fruits, with no added sugar, preservatives, artificial colors or flavors, and over 3 servings of fruit in every 15.2 oz bottle, just for you.

Well good for you, Naked Juice! You've got my support!
So there you have it. If you want REAL fresh squeezed orange juice - with authentic real orange flavor - not fake orange flavor added back in, your best bet is to either:
*buy a juicer & squeeze your own
*look for the "Naked" brand
*start contacting companies & ask them yourself.
If I find any other companies, I will let... you... know... (((sigh)))
