After a few months, my husband was completely on board, after he experienced the life changing results for himself. Now, he doesn't have sugar cravings, and he has gone from darn near "needing" his meat & potato platters to "needing" (and wanting!) his green smoothies, plate full of fruits & veges, organic free range / pastured eggs, salads, or a hand full of nuts!
He had a bit of a push in wanting to eat right, because several years ago he was "diagnosed" with pre-diabetes. He was told by a certified nutritionist to count all his carbs, eat at least 50% whole grains, limit sugar (but definitely eat some, so he could enjoy life), etc. As long as he was counting his carbs, he could substitute & adjust his "exchanges" for each meal & snack, & it didn't matter if he had 50% white bread & refined foods or other junk. Really???
Guess what... IT DIDN'T WORK. It made zero difference in his blood sugar levels. It didn't improve anything. And his sugars & energy levels fluctuated horribly. He got worse. The only thing that was making a difference was exercise at that point, but they still prescribed medications, which he's been on & off of over the past few years.
When we got on the "real food" bandwagon & figured out how we really should be eating, everything changed. THAT was what made all the difference in the world! It's amazing how real food can heal!
He sees this as much more than 'just about him and his health'. It's also about him being healthy enough to support our family. It's about him being around for many years to enjoy his grandchildren. It's about him setting a good example for our children, who can then pass this way of living on to their children, & so on... There is a great generational reward in one person changing their lifestyle for the better.
My husband is SO supportive of our real food & natural living endeavors. He tells people about it all the time. He brags about it more than I do! I am so very blessed to have such a wonderful man who "gets it"!!!
So... I also wanted to share this awesome entry from 100 Days of Real Food (one of my very favorite real food bloggers!) Her husband wrote about real food from a man's perspective, & I love what he had to say. If you're having a hard time getting your man on board, or you want some encouragement for helping other friends/family get their hubbies on board, OR you're just curious what other men think of this whole "real & natural" ORIGINAL way of eating, take a look here:
One of my favorite parts is when he says he avoids telling people he eats "healthy food", because that seems to be judged more harshly. Instead - he does just like I do - & tells people he stays away from processed food & just eats REAL food. It's harder to argue with that!
Keep plunking away, be patient, & enjoy the journey! Continue to set the example.
He (or she) will come around. :)
