When I started coming off medications with the help of my Naturopath, she told me that I actually didn't have ENOUGH acid in my body, & that's why I was experiencing reflux. HUH??? Yah, cuz that made sense! I figured I better research the internet on this one. So I did. Guess what..... She was right! Sheeeeeeeeeesh. So in the trash with the reflux pills!
I had stopped eating anything out of a box or package & switched to whole foods (better known as REAL food) & while the reflux had reduced, it hadn't gone totally away at that point. So I also stopped eating sugary chocolate, & started drinking 1 tsp. of raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar in a glass of water each morning like she told me to do. At first, I added a couple drops of stevia or a little raw honey to sweeten it, but I've since gotten used to it & don't even need to sweeten it anymore. REFLUX ALL GONE! :)
When I make anything that's chocolatey, I either use carob instead... OR I use raw cacao, which is totally raw unprocessed un-alkalized cocoa bean (ground to a powder or available in small bean sized "cacao nibs".) They can be purchased at health food stores or online. At the bottom of this post is a photo of the nibs. They're not as bitter as baking cocoa. Many people even sprinkle them straight on top of their ice cream!
Years ago my medical doctor told me that cheese & possibly dairy were probably the main culprits for my acid reflux. Not so. It doesn't affect me at all. But getting rid of commercial chocolate did. If I ever cheat & eat some, I notice the burning within less than an hour. I've decided it's just not worth it anymore. My husband had it horrible for several years also. When we made our diet changes & added raw apple cider vinegar in, VOILA! His too went away. No more pills. Yay!
