This kit, in my opinion, should be included in your home 'farmacy' cabinet - AS WELL AS your 72 hour emergency kit (You know... the one that FEMA & church preparedness organizations have been recommending for years, & the one we ALL have sitting by the door ready to go at a moment's notice? Yeah, that one.)
Other recommendations to add to this essentials kit are aloe vera (for burns, cuts, etc), carrier oil, (for diluting & spreading essential oils), witch hazel (anti-inflammatory & astringent properties), & rose water (for soothing, moisturizing, & as an antiseptic). Rose water can be purchased from health food stores or online... Or you can make your own by using fresh rose petals with water & vegetable glycerine. Go HERE for instructions to make your own rose water...
These oils listed below can be used for health/personal care *as well as* cleaning & sanitizing.
I add to this list:
Oil of Oregano
.....And here's why I think these are the best of the basics:
The BEST for burns & great for relaxing/sleeping. It's a natural antibiotic, antiseptic, antidepressant, sedative, & detoxifier. It helps prevent scarring & promotes healing, & it is helpful for clinical and psychological shock. There are so many other beneficial properties, I couldn't begin to list them all. To be honest, lavender isn't my favorite smell in the world (it used to be, but it's not anyore)... But I wouldn't be without this oil for ANYTHING.
Powerful antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial, & excellent antifungal. It's used for treating candida, infections, ringworm, sunburn, acne, athlete's foot, toothache, etc...
Used by many ancient cultures & has many health promoting properties. Very beneficial to the digestive system, respiratory system, and great for circulation. It's an excellent anti-inflammatory & antiseptic. It can be used to treat indigestion, flatulence, bad breath, varicose veins, headaches/migraines, skin irritations, toothache, rheumatism, and fatigue. It's also wonderful for keeping mice, fleas, spiders, & ants away! I learned last year that 1 drop of peppermint essential oil is as powerful as more than 20 cups of peppermint tea!
There are a couple types of Chamomile. The most used are German & Roman. German is a deep dark beautiful blue color, due to the high content of azulene. It is also particularly beneficial for skin & in treating skin conditions such as acne, scars, eczema, psoriasis, injuries, etc...
Both chamomiles are wonderful for helping with nerves & insomnia. They are antibacterial, antiseptic, disinfectant, & anti-inflammatory. (Rheumatism included). It is helpful for teething troubles in kids, & it can be added to baths to calm & soothe. It's used in the treatments of burns, sunburn, psoriasis, eczema, asthma, hay fever, diarrhea, sprays, nausea, fever, & depression. It's analgesic, diuretic, sedative, & very rejuvenating. It's reported that anorexia nervosa has been treated with chamomile also.
Think chest congestion! And COLIC! It is cooling in the summer & helps the immune system in the winter. It's anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antibiotic, anti-viral diuretic, analgesic, and deodorizing. It's been used to treat coughs, colds, cysts, candida, diabetes, & sunburn, & has been useful in veterinary care & as a repellant to insects.
The emotion oil. Oh, how it helps with emotions... I LOVE this oil. Chilblains is a painful, itching swelling on the skin, typically on a hand or foot, caused by poor circulation in the skin when exposed to cold (similar to frostbite)... and geranium can make this disappear overnight! It is used in skincare, & for treatment of endometriosis, menopause, diabetes, blood disorders, throat infections, nervous issues, as a sedative & relaxer, and has even been used in the treatment of infertility.
This oil is a great physical and mental stimulant. It's used in treating muscular issues & is great in morning baths. It fights sprains, arthritis, rheumatism, depression, fatigue, memory loss, migraine headaches, coughs, flu, diabetes, acne, and cellulite. Makes for a great oil in cooking too!
Another great cooking oil (think herbs!)... Thyme is antiviral, antibiotic, antiseptic, diuretic, & should be used WITH CAUTION. It can stimulate the thyroid gland & lymphatic system & should never be used without diluting first. Moderation is key here. It's great to use in the diffuser when flu is running through your home. It also is good for detox, whooping cough, warts, rheumatism, neuralgia, fatigue, & acne. It is great for warding off parasites & insects, & it's often used in hair & skin care recipes.
What isn't there to love? It wakes me up.! It makes me smile! It's great for cooking, great for green smoothies, great for lemonade, & great as a cleaner. It's an amazing water purifier - THINK PREPAREDNESS!!! Lemon is antiseptic & antibiotic. It's used in treating insect bites, fatigue, headaches, cellulite, & wrinkles. Mix a drop of lemon EO with warm water, raw honey, & a pinch of cayenne pepper for cough, congestion, & if you're cold... It'll warm you right up & soothe your throat.
Tooth-ache-be-gone... Clove has been used historically for numbing the mouth & sterilizing surgical instruments. It's a super quick cure for aching teeth/gums. It's antibacterial, antiseptic, analgesic, & is wonderful for disease and infection prevention. It treats asthma, nausea, sinusitis, & can be used as a sedative. It's also useful for digestive issues and muscular disorders.
Oil of Oregano
The powerful of the powerful! As Dr. Cass Ingram states, "Oregano is a medicine chest in a bottle". His book, "The Cure Is In The Cupboard" has a wealth of information on the healing powers of oregano. From his book: "Laboratory research at Weber State University showed it to have a 99 percent kill rate against in vitro colonies of Streptococcus pneumonia, a microorganism responsible for many kinds of lung and throat infections. Oregano is antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and antiparasitic." It's also an anti-oxidant high in DNA repair activity... There is literally SO much about this oil, I'd have to give a whole entire page to cover even a portion of it all. If you'd like to read more on this amazing natural medicine, read THIS.
We have used "OOO" in our family on many occasions to cure strep throat, sinus infections, flu, food poisoning, & other infections/illnesses. It's the best of the best. NEVER use "OOO" in its undiluted form. ALWAYS dilute it. ALWAYS. I can't emphasize this enough. It is so hot that a tiny touch of oil will burn instantly, if not diluted. Keep out of reach of children, & as usual, use in moderation.
Note: EO's should never be taken internally unless directed by a medical professional certified in aromatherapy & essential oil use. We have used it internally with great success, but we always take the capsules with food (like a little piece of bread), so it doesn't burn once inside your throat/belly. Again, this is a personal choice, & I do not advocate internal use. Do your research first!
If weakness occurs when using for illnesses, try taking extra iron or eat foods rich in iron & drop back on your dose a bit. Large amounts of "OOO" can cause a drop in iron levels on occasion. I had this happen once, but I quickly reversed it when I got more iron in my system.
This oil is my heavenly oil. It is beneficial during meditation and was historically used for religious purposes. Frankincense was after all, given as a gift to our Savior when He was born. It encourages communication, heals wounds/sores, & is used in treating fevers, coughs, colds, stress, bronchitis, laryngitis, nervous conditions, & tension. It's also very helpful in treating skin conditions & reducing scars. Frankincense is often used in "higher end" & natural skin care products. Many people have had great success in treating cancer with this God sent oil. I was amazed as I read the story of one young woman who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. She refused surgery & treatment until she first tried Frankincense oil, which she had recently heard about. She applied it to her throat 3 times/day & within 1 month, there was zero sign of the cancer. Her doctors were speechless & had no explanation for its disappearance. Hm....... :) I personally use it in my own homemade deodorant recipe, as this allows it to penetrate into the under-arm & side chest area where breast & lymphatic cancers are so prevalent. Prevention is the best medicine.
I can't help but love how versatile essential oils are. People far too often underestimate their power, & I truly feel so sorry for those who don't know they exist - and those who don't believe they work.
I'm loving making my own recipes using essential oils. There are SO many possibilities.
They can be used for every day as well as first aid & emergency situations. Make your own non-toxic baby oil, baby powder, baby lotion, air-fresheners, soaps, body powders, lotions & creams, breath fresheners, hair products, candles, carpet fresheners, cleaners, laundry scents, mist sprays, massage oils, mouthwash, potpourri, skincare, sunburn relief, sunscreen/suntan oil, tooth-paste/powder, deodorant, furniture polish, gardening, insect bites/repellants, and so much more...
Baby / Body Powder:
2 Tb. non-gmo corn starch or arrowroot powder
5-20 drops of a single or combination of essential oils such as soft lavender or chamomile, refreshing citrus scents, beautiful floral scents, masculine forest or spicy scents, or minty scents.
Shake in closed container & let sit for several hours before use. (Spice shakers & powdered sugar dusters work well for this)
4 fl. oz. purified water
1/2 tsp. raw honey or 2-4 drops of stevia extract and/or 1 tsp. vegetable glycerine
20 drops of EO such as peppermint, spearmint, clove, cinnamon, orange, lemon, etc...
Mix in a mist sprayer, shake well, & mist directly into mouth.
1 tsp. aloe vera gel (straight from the plant, if possible)
5 drops of single or combo EO such as lavender, chamomile, & geranium.
Combine & gently apply several times per day
***This same recipe can be used for soothing insect bites.
The above oils - as well as tea tree oil - can be used.
